Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How much does a custom carved stone project cost?
A: There are many factors that determine the cost of a project but the first thing you should consider is the overall size. The cost depends greatly on whether you want a stone to sit on a shelf or one made from a giant boulder that can be seen from the road. Other factors that determine cost are the type of stone and it’s availability (the majority of our work is made from local Tenino sandstone but we can special order specific stones or work with hard rock such as granite) as well as the complexity of the carving.
Q: Do you sell your work online?
A: Due to the nature of stone work we do not sell our work online. Our work is only available by visiting the Shed located at 147 Olympia St N. Tenino, WA 98589 or by visiting our booth at events throughout the year (see our CALENDAR page for more information).
Q: Can I buy Tenino sandstone?
A: Tenino sandstone is not being quarried or sold commercially. Because there is no active quarry to provide the stone we cannot offer the stone as a raw material. We purchase our material as remnant boulders left over from the quarrying process that ended years ago. If you are searching for landscaping or dimensional cut stone for masonry applications we can only offer our recommendations for where to find them elsewhere.
Q: Do you teach Stonecarving classes and how can I sign up?
A: We offer small, in-depth classes for adults through our partnership with Arbutus Folk School in Olympia. You can find out if we have any current classes by checking our CALENDAR page or by visiting ArbutusFolkSchool.org. Arbutus handles all our registration so if find a class you are looking for please contact Arbutus Folk School to sign up. Our classes typically run for four consecutive Saturdays 10am-2pm at our shop located at 147 Olympia St. N Tenino, WA.
We also offer soapstone carving classes for children. Ed Salerno is the class instructor and teaches in classrooms grades 3-12. For questions or to book a class use our CONTACT page.
