CARVING A HEAD IN STONE (COMING SOON)

A short video showing my studio process for my current work: head studies carved in limestone using hand tools and traditional methods. I currently share a workspace with Chris Pellettieri in the Bronx, NY.

PELLETTIERI STONE CARVERS’ ACADEMY, NYC

I am currently working as an assistant teacher for an educational carving program that works with students from Mather Building Arts and Craftsmanship High School and is partnered with the National Parks Service. The program runs once a week during the school year and also offers a 4-week summer youth employment program. Classes are held at Governor’s Island National Monument.

TENINO STONE CARVERS

A promotional video I made in 2018 for the stone carving workshop and carving guild located in Tenino, WA. Tenino is known for it’s historical sandstone quarries and it was here where I first learned to carve from Tenino’s self-taught master carver Keith Phillips. I served as an apprentice to Keith Phillips from 2015-2019.

ANOTHER BITE

This 1-minute film highlights the labor intensive methods we used in Tenino’s sandstone quarry to salvage remnant boulders from the property and move them into our workshop. Tenino’s quarry is inactive, leaving only remnants for use as carving material and only pry bars and lumber with which to move them. The film sheds light on some of the many challenges we faced sustaining our professional carving operation there.

NORTHWEST STONE SCULPTORS ASSOCIATION

In 2016 I joined the NWSSA, a non-profit organization of stone sculptors with hundreds of members in Washington, Oregon, California, and Canada. Their mission is to nurture the community of stone sculptors by developing educational opportunities, providing a support system to members, and facilitating interaction with regional, national, and international communities. They hold two annual summer carving symposiums in WA and OR, bringing together sculptors of all ages and artistic backgrounds with beginner carvers and professional artists lecturers from around the world.

This video was made in 2021 of our sculpture show which was closed to the public due to COVID-19 restrictions, allowing us to hold a private sculpture walk for our members to share personal stories about their art.

LOST ON THE MEKONG

In 2014 my friend Walker Lee and I traveled the length of the Mekong River, from the headwaters in Tibet to the mouth of the Mekong delta in Vietnam. We made a DIY documentary series about the people we met who’s lives were intertwined with the river and the impacts of development on their way of life. It was our first attempt at making a full-length documentary film, a project that has taken us nearly 10 years (and counting) to complete.

The entire 5-part series can be viewed online for free at www.lostonthemekong.com
