Since 1985 Keith Phillips has been carving stone in Tenino, Washington from the site of the former Hercules #1 sandstone quarry. In 2014 he opened a workshop and showroom in the heart of Tenino’s historic downtown district (located at 147 Olympia St. N. Tenino, WA 98589, behind Marin Computers and the Iron Works Boutique). The Shed offers visitors to Tenino the experience of being transported into the past in an old fashioned hard carving workshop. See the art and craft of stone carving come alive as Keith Phillips and his proteges practice their craft, pick up a copy of the Tenino Sandstone Walking Tour map, and chat with local artists about the history of Tenino sandstone.

Stone Carving Classes for Adults

Tenino’s master stone cutter Keith Phillips offers seasonal stone carving classes for adult beginners in the Spring and Fall. Our classes run four consecutive Saturday sessions from 10am to 2pm, located at the Shed in downtown Tenino. All materials are provided, students need only bring their ideas and a readiness to learn. (PLEASE NOTE: If there are no classes listed at Arbutus Folk School then we do not have classes currently available. Our small staff and our primary business of custom built stonework limit our ability to offer year round classes.)

Stone Carving Classes for Kids

Ed Salerno of the Tenino Stone Carvers teaches stone carving classes for kids in classrooms grades 3-12 all over the south Puget Sound. The class runs 90 minutes and each student takes home a carved and polished animal sculpture made from soapstone. The cost of the class is $10 per student.
